I’ve been using this term recently without really considering what it truly means. I’d like to support spiritual entrepreneurs in their quest to create meaningful change. Is this what differentiates a regular entrepreneur from a spiritual one? Perhaps regular entrepreneurs are primarily driven by money, while spiritual entrepreneurs are motivated by a deeper desire for fulfilment and meaning.
I was a regular entrepreneur for 17 years. I was driven by fear and scarcity, and I did a bloody good job of running a business because of it! The daily routine of troubleshooting and firefighting was enough to burn me out, and it took me a long time to find my exit.
It wasn’t through a practical or logical route that I found my way out but through a spiritual one. I started visiting the local Hindu temple on my way to work—the BAPS Swaminarayan temple in Neasden [https://londonmandir.baps.org/the-mandir/ ]. The statues of deities there, whom I had never encountered before, became pillars of strength for me, representing the removal of obstacles and the fight for the “good fight.” I began reading books on manifesting. I envisioned myself outside my workplace, free and part of a supportive community. I had no idea how to achieve this, but I knew it was what I wanted. I wrote affirmations on sticky notes around my desktop: ‘Your job is to be the light’. I took a photo because it felt meaningful. Perhaps I was a spiritual entrepreneur after all.
I certainly identified as a bit ‘woo-woo’ but such a term was hidden away so that no one would judge my credibility. Are we moving away from terms like “woo-woo” and towards “spiritual entrepreneur” to bring credibility to a spiritual practice?
In an age of ‘doing’ and ‘action’, perhaps the term spiritual entrepreneur is a statement of reclamation of the importance of slowing down to notice what is ‘becoming’ to feel more in alignment with each business choice.
Do you identify as a spiritual entrepreneur? If so, what does being a spiritual entrepreneur mean to you? What are your biggest challenges? What are your goals? Are you trying to create meaningful change in your life?
