Answering the Call: A Tarot Reflection on Purpose and Meaning

by | Mar 4, 2025 | BLOG

Do you ever find yourself wondering about your place in the world, especially as the world itself shifts around you? Perhaps you’ve stepped away from outdated ways of living – left behind toxic work environments and let go of the pressure to prioritise money over your own well-being. You’ve chosen a different path – one of purpose, meaning, and authenticity. But what now? What is this calling that’s tugging at you, and why does it matter to follow it?

This past week has been one of major shifts and changing narratives, both in the world at large and in my own inner landscape.

So, I turned to the tarot, asking: What does it mean to step into a life of purpose and meaning? How do we navigate the uncertainty that comes with it? (Skip to the end to watch the video).

The Four of Pentacles (Reversed) – Releasing the Grip

The first card for ‘Acceptance’ was the Four of Pentacles reversed – a clear message about loosening our hold on money and control. When we choose purpose over security, we inevitably face fears about resources. Can we trust that we will be supported as we take this leap? Can we surrender the old narrative that equates financial stability with self-worth? This card reminds us that clinging too tightly to what we think keeps us safe might actually be what keeps us stuck.

The King of Swords – Clarity Amidst Chaos

Next, the King of Swords appeared in the place of ‘Acceptance’, offering wisdom and structure. He represents clear thinking, truth, and discernment – a reminder that while the journey of purpose is deeply intuitive, it also requires clarity and strategy. It’s about knowing what’s right for us, even when uncertainty looms. Stepping into authenticity often means embracing the unknown. It’s in this tension between clarity and surrender that we find our way. Can we accept that this is a hard dance?

The Moon – Embracing the Wild and the Unknown

And then came The Moon – the ultimate symbol of mystery, intuition, and the ebb and flow of life (and didn’t it look beautiful in the night sky this week?) This card asks us: Can you walk the winding path, even when the way ahead is dimly lit? Purpose isn’t a straight road; it’s an unfolding journey that requires us to embrace both our wild and tamed selves – the wolf and the dog. It calls us to acknowledge the hidden depths within us, the fears and longings rising like the crayfish from the dark waters. To truly step into purpose, we must bring our whole selves into the light – anger, doubt, grief, longing – without casting any of it into the shadows.

Walking the Path Together

Choosing a life of meaning isn’t about ease; it’s about authenticity. It’s about trusting the natural cycles of life – the waxing and waning, the inhale and the exhale. It’s about knowing that to create a new way of being, we must break free from rigid structures that no longer serve us.

And in a world that often feels like it’s unravelling, our response matters. We can cling to old systems, point fingers, and take sides to feel safe, or we can root into our own authenticity. We can create spaces of honesty, openness, and realness. We can choose to be a positive ripple in our own communities, offering presence and connection in times of uncertainty.

So, what about you? How are you leaning into your own journey of purpose and meaning? What is calling you forward, even when the path is unclear? I’d love to hear how this resonates with you.
